NHTSA Estimates Thousands of Fatalities During Holiday Travel

Based on statistics compiled between 1982 and 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates approximately 2,300 people will be killed as a result of holiday traffic accidents in 2019. As millions of Americans make plans to travel this holiday season, the NHTSA projects nearly 1,200 traffic fatalities during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

NHTSA: More Fatalities As a Result of Holiday Traffic Accidents

Due to an increase in the amount of traffic during holidays, there are typically more motor vehicle traffic crash fatalities during holiday periods than during non-holiday periods, according to the NHTSA.

The number of traffic crash fatalities forecasted for 2019 include the following four major holiday periods:

  • Fourth of July: 594 (est.)
  • Labor Day: 448 (est.)
  • Thanksgiving: 454 (est.)
  • Christmas and New Year’s: 799 (est.)

These estimates are based on data gathered between 1982 and 2018. Although the forecasted number of fatalities is just a prediction, the NHTSA’s projections have been a fairly accurate estimation in previous years.

Any injury or fatality related to a traffic accident can be detrimental to those involved, and family members may suffer to some degree as well. Because so many Americans are celebrating time spent with family and friends, holiday traffic accidents can be especially painful.
