Jardiance Side Effects and an FDA Safety Communication

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added Jardiance side effects warnings to Jardiance and other diabetes drugs in the SGLT2 inhibitor class. The warnings, issued by the agency in December 2015, are for ketoacidosis, or dangerously high blood acid levels, and urinary tract infections. Jardiance is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, bad drug attorneys note.

FDA Safety Communication Covers Six Diabetes Drugs

Jardiance is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company. The drug was approved by the FDA in 2014 to treat type 2 diabetes. In May 2015, the FDA issued a safety communication cautioning that SGLT2 inhibitors, including Jardiance, may be linked to an increased risk of ketoacidosis, high levels of ketones (blood acids) that could require hospitalization for the patient.

In the FDA’s announcement, the agency stated that from March 2013 to June 2014, it had received 20 reports of diabetic ketoacidosis, ketoacidosis or ketosis in patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors. All 20 patients required hospitalization or visits to hospital emergency rooms for treatment. Since that time, the FDA has received additional reports concerning Jardiance side effects and an updated safety information from the FDA was released in December 2015 adding warnings to the labels for Jardiance and other SGLT2 inhibitors.

In addition to Jardiance, other SGLT2 inhibitors identified in the safety communication include the following:

  • Xigduo XR (dapagliflozin and metformin extended-release)
  • Farxiga (dapagliflozin)
  • Invokana (canagliflozin)
  • Glyxambi (empagliflozin and linagliptin)
  • Invokamet (canagliflozin and metformin)

The FDA safety communication indicates that some users of SGLT2 inhibitor diabetes drugs may require hospitalization  or emergency room treatment after suffering symptoms of ketoacidosis. These symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion, Sleepiness or fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing

Jardiance side effects may include:

  • Yeast Infection
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Dehydration
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

The FDA also cautions patients using of SGLT2 inhibitors to be alert for signs and symptoms of a urinary tract infection, such as a feeling of burning when urinating or the need to urinate often or right away; pain in the lower part of the stomach area or pelvis; fever; or blood in the urine.

Injured Patients May Be Entitled to Compensation

Drug manufacturers have a duty to ensure their products are accompanied by full and accurate instructions and warnings to guide prescribing doctors and other health care providers in making treatment decisions. If a drug maker fails to fulfill this duty, it could be held liable in lawsuits for injuries that may result.

Patients who have suffered severe Jardiance side effects may be entitled to compensation for damages, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish
  • Loss of income or ability to work

If a patient dies from complications after taking Jardiance, his or her family members may be able to pursue claims for their loved one’s wrongful death. Compensation may include:

  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish from the loss of a loved one
  • Loss of financial support of a loved one
  • Funeral expenses

Affected patients are encouraged to speak with a Jardiance lawsuit attorney to learn more about their rights and remedies.
