Since its introduction in 2011, Xarelto has been marketed by joint manufacturers Johnson & Johnson and Bayer as an alternative to Coumadin (warfarin). Coumadin has long been used as an anticoagulant to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes.
The challenge with blood thinners in general is the increased possibility of internal bleeding. Other Xarelto side effects that have been alleged include pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.
Reports of Adverse Events
Adverse effects of Xarelto (rivaroxaban) consumption have resulted in a number of lawsuits in California and across the country. In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration reportedly received hundreds of reports of unwanted Xarelto side effects.
On August 29, 2014, a California woman filed a complaint alleging that uncontrolled hemorrhaging caused by Xarelto almost ended her life. In the complaint, it is stated that she had been taking the medication for a few months before the severe bleeding occurred. She now seeks compensation for permanent injuries, life-long medical treatment and pain and suffering. (Case1:14-cv-05133-FB-RML)
Lack of Ability to Control Bleeding
Controversy surrounds Xarelto in part because, at present, there is no known substance or antidote to stop excessive or uncontrollable bleeding. By contrast, internal bleeding caused by Coumadin can be addressed by the administration of Vitamin K.
Johnson & Johnson and Bayer respond by stating that they have been working with Portola Pharmaceuticals to develop an antidote when Xarelto induces unwanted internal bleeding. At the same time, the companies are trying to get FDA approval for expanded uses of Xarelto so that it can be used on an even wider population base. For example, they want approval to market the drug for use in treating acute coronary syndrome (ACS), despite the fact that the FDA has rejected such a request on three previous occasions. Nonetheless, the companies have announced three new clinical trials aimed at expanding the approved uses of Xarelto.
Litigation Can Seek Compensation
Lawsuits have been filed in California and in other states that have sought compensation for those allegedly harmed by the drug. Survivors of those that allegedly died due to Xarelto side effects have also filed suit. Such wrongful death suits often seek compensation for various expenses and losses, including loss of companionship. Some plaintiffs have also sought a recall of the medication until such time as an appropriate antidote can be developed and approved by the FDA.
