Bydureon Overview

Initially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2012, Bydureon is a once-weekly injection typically administered in the upper arm, thigh or abdomen. Although it only recently hit the market, it is a long-acting form of Byetta, a similar medication prescribed to type 2 diabetes patients. Both drugs function in much the same way as they stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin if the patient’s blood sugar levels are low. However, concerns have arisen pertaining to Bydureon, and plaintiffs allege that the product causes similar side effects and complications that are the focal point of Byetta lawsuits throughout the country.

Risks and Side Effects

Plaintiffs filing Bydureon lawsuits claim that they experienced common, less severe side effects during Bydureon treatments including indigestion, headaches, constipation, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and bumps or itching at the injection site.

Several studies and clinical trials have linked Bydureon to pancreatic inflammation, a condition known as pancreatitis. If not caught early, pancreatitis may lead to a fatal pancreatic cancer or thyroid cancer diagnosis. Experts in the medical industry claim that not many patients are aware that they have developed pancreatitis as most symptoms are not easily discernible; rather, patients may believe that the side effects they are experiencing are normal and are not suggestive of a potentially fatal condition.

Unfortunately, most pancreatitis diagnoses are not made until the disease has progressed into its later stages. If you have experienced one or more of the following signs of pancreatic cancer, seek medical help:

  • Clay-colored stools
  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Jaundice

If diagnosed, or if you have lost a loved one as a result of pancreatic cancer, consider filing a Bydureon lawsuit in California to seek compensation for your injuries.

According to the FDA, Bydureon may also cause low blood glucose levels, allergic reactions and kidney complications including kidney failure. In October 2007, the agency released a warning to inform consumers of the potential relationship between Byetta and pancreatic cancer. By the time the agency issued the announcement, it had reportedly received 30 claims from patients who had developed the disease. Critics assert that the FDA should not have approved Bydureon when it was receiving adverse event reports from Byetta patients.

Plaintiffs filing Bydureon lawsuits also claim that the medication resulted in necrotizing and hemorrhaging pancreatitis diagnoses which increased their risk of organ failure and death. If you or a loved one have developed pancreatitis, thyroid cancer or pancreatic cancer while taking Bydureon, you may be eligible to file a Bydureon lawsuit in California and hold the manufacturer responsible for compensation for your injuries. In California, injured individuals have two years from the date on which the injury occurred to pursue a claim; if you fail to do so within this timeframe, you may forfeit your right to pursue a claim and seek damages.
