DePuy Synthes, FDA Issue Recall

The DePuy Synthes Craniomaxillofacial Distraction System is intended for use in both adults and children and is typically implanted following birth defects or post-traumatic injury. In April 2014, DePuy informed hospitals that the device was prone to early failure; specifically, it had the potential to reverse direction and subsequently lose the distance it was intended to give the patient. Four months later, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its most serious recall notice, a Class I recall, for the DePuy Synthes Craniomaxillofacial System. The FDA informed consumers and the healthcare community of the potential complications that could result from the device.

If the device reverses direction, the patient is at risk for severe and life-threatening complications. Adults are at risk of requiring surgical intervention to remove the failing device, while infants and toddlers may experience obstruction of the trachea, which can ultimately lead to respiratory arrest and death.

Younger children are more at risk for complications because, unlike adults, they do not yet possess the ability to completely control their airway. All in all, DePuy received 15 adverse event reports from affected patients. Attorneys expect the number of reports to grow in the coming months as notice of the FDA recall continues to circulate throughout media reports.
