About the Wright Conserve Hip System

Since its approval, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received more than 200 adverse event reports associated with the products. Additionally, a growing number of lawsuits have been filed by those working with a Wright Conserve Hip System lawyer, alleging that the products were defectively designed and caused early device failure that often resulted in the need for revision procedures and surgeries. According to the National Joint Registry for England and Wales, only one other metal-on-metal hip implant system had worse revision rates than the Wright Conserve device: the DePuy ASR hip replacement implant.

The Wright Conserve line of hip replacements consists of the following devices, which are constructed with four metal parts – a Conserve cup, a modular neck, a femoral head and a femoral stem:

  • Conserve Total Hip System with BFH Technology
  • Conserve Total A-Class Advanced Metal with BFH Technology Hip System
  • Conserve Femoral Surface Replacement

Like most other metal-on-metal hip devices, those included in the Wright Conserve line are made of a femoral cup and metal ball made out of a cobalt and chromium alloy. Plaintiffs filing lawsuits against the manufacturer with help from a Wright Conserve Hip System lawyer claim that these metal parts may potentially wear or rub together, resulting in the deposit of metal shards into a patient’s bloodstream and nearby tissues. This type of metal poisoning can cause several serious side effects, including:

  • Pseudotumors
  • Infection
  • Early device failure
  • Inflammation
  • Tissue necrosis or tissue death
  • Biologic toxicity
  • Metallosis
  • Systemic affects elsewhere in the body

If a patient experiences complications due to these implants, he or she may wish to consult with a Wright Conserve Hip System lawyer to learn more about his or her legal rights in California. Many plaintiffs allege that they needed to undergo additional procedures to remove the affected devices, and many of these surgeries proved to be quite costly.

All federal Wright Conserve lawsuits were transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in February 2011 for coordinated discovery as well as other pretrial proceedings. All of the lawsuits filed against the manufacturer allege that the metal-on-metal design of the system may result in excessive levels of metal ions in the blood, which often leads to premature device failure and metallosis.
