Experts: Modifying Affected Vehicles May Lead to Shorter Engine Lifespans

According to desmoinesregister.com, the lawsuit follows similar lawsuits filed in other states after Volkswagen acknowledged rigging emissions technology on its diesel vehicles to pass air-quality tests. VW has admitted the Jetta and other models with diesel engines have an emission system that passes government tests when idling, but puts out more pollution when it’s actually driven on the road.

Experts say modifying the VW cars to conform to EPA regulations could lead to shorter engine lifespans and greater fuel usage. The auto maker faces fines for violations of the Clean Air Act of up to $37,500 for each affected vehicle. At an estimated 482,000 vehicles, the potential fines could reach as much $18 billion. The lawsuit states that the plaintiff is suing for breach of warranty and violation of the Iowa Consumer Frauds Act, the website reported.

Affected Consumers May Be Entitled to Compensation

The actions of Volkswagen AG could impact the safety and value of affected automobiles. If that is the case, then consumers who have purchased those vehicles could be entitled to compensation for their losses, including reduced value of their car and the costs of any repairs needed to satisfy U.S. regulators, as well as possible violations of state and federal deceptive trade practices act.

Affected consumers are encouraged to speak with a consumer fraud attorney to learn more about their rights and remedies against Volkswagen AG.
