Woman Reportedly Diagnosed with Mesothelioma After Inhaling Dangerous Fibers
Jackson County reached a settlement of $80 million with Kansas City-based U.S. Engineering, the company responsible for the removal of asbestos from 1983 to 1985. According to the Springfield News-Leader, roughly 7,500 people could be eligible for medical monitoring and diagnostic tests, including those who can prove they were in the courthouse during and after asbestos removal.
A worker testified that dust and grit from the asbestos covered everything in her office, and witnesses reported that workers took little to no precautions when removing the substance from the courthouse. According to the report, a woman who worked in the courthouse died in 2010 from complications from inhaling asbestos fibers after being diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2009. In a separate lawsuit with the county and U.S. Engineering Co., her heirs settled for over $10 million, the website reported.
