A New Jersey Zimmer Kinectiv lawsuit may be an option for patients who have suffered severe complications from metal hip replacements. The Zimmer Kinectiv hip replacement device is one type of metal-on-metal hip replacement option that exists today. Despite the benefits of these devices, components in some of these devices have been alleged to cause severe pain, loss of mobility, and even the need for additional surgery for the patient. The Zimmer Kinectiv hip replacement has been the subject of a recall, and it is expected that a New Jersey Zimmer Kinectiv lawsuit may be filed on behalf of affected patients who have suffered pain and injury as a result of a hip replacement procedure.

Why Hip Replacements Surgeries Are Necessary

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases states that before hip replacement surgery is recommended, exercise, medication and canes are first used. If those do not make any difference, then doctors will resort to the surgery itself, which is used to address mobility problems caused by tumors, arthritis and hip injuries. During a hip replacement procedure, the surgeon replaces the faulty hip joint with a manmade joint, usually plastic and/or metal.

The ultimate aim of hip replacement surgery is to help people regain mobility that is as easy and painless as possible. Recovering from surgery is a process that takes many months and often includes working with a physical therapist. Sometimes, an artificial hip joint becomes loose or pops out, possibly requiring further surgery. This type of surgery that fixes problems from the original surgery is called revision surgery. In typical cases, however, the initial surgery is a success.

Metal Hip Implants

Metal hip implants come with several unique risks, as the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains. One of the most serious risks is that people will suffer damage to their muscle, bone and nerves. This is due to the existence of small metal particles in the bloodstream which break off of the metal hip implants when patients move. These pieces often contain chromium and ion, which can cause harm. No matter how careful a surgeon is, it is literally impossible to fully prevent metal particles from occurring, although some patients deal with it better than others.

Zimmer Kinectiv Implants

Zimmer Kinectiv hip implants were designed to account for the wide array of differences in leg length and height from person to person, according to the manufacturer. It also aimed to last longer than the 15 years a hip replacement is expected to last.

However, in June 2015, the FDA initiated a Class I recall for Zimmer Kinectiv hip implants manufactured and distributed between March 31, 2015 and April 20, 2015, saying that many of these implants showed unusual, unexpected amounts of residue had been left behind. Allergic reaction, infection and even death are some of the potential consequences stemming from this residue.

Zimmer Kinectiv Hip Recall Lawsuits

Some patients have alleged that Zimmer does not perform due diligence in checking that its products, including its hip implants, are safe for consumer use. Many of the current lawsuits claim that the company failed to warn consumers of the potential risks associated with its device. Furthermore, this is not the first time that the company has been sued over its hip replacement devices. In a 2012 SEC filing, Zimmer revealed that more than $388 million had been paid in Zimmer hip settlements, with an additional $230 million set aside to compensate other injured plaintiffs.
