Report: Patients Urged to Promptly Report Foot and Leg Issues
Health care professionals treating patients using canaglifozin, commonly marketed under the name Invokana, are being urged by the FDA to closely monitor them for any issues affecting the legs and feet. According to Managed Care, patients using the medication to lower blood sugar have been advised to promptly report foot or leg soreness, infections and related problems to their doctors now that an ongoing study indicates a link to lower-extremity issues.
The move coincides with a study involving the drug that suggests those who take it face a higher risk of needing leg or foot amputations than non-users. Though the study is ongoing, it indicates that seven in 1,000 canaglifozin users who take a 100 mg dose will require a leg or foot amputation, compared with only three in 1,000 of those who took a placebo. Many of the problems thought to stem from canagliflozin use were shown to affect patients’ toes, the website reported.
