Some Doctors Suggest Caution When Taking Invokana to Treat Diabetes

A random drug trial involving multiple groups of 117 people has revealed concerning information about the popular type 2 diabetes drug Invokana. According to MedPage Today, the results of the study were alarming enough to lead a university doctor and her colleagues to suggest that further diabetes treatment using SGLT2 inhibitors should be done with caution.

Among the most concerning findings resulting from the study is the fact that those taking canaglifozin, commonly sold under the brand name Invokana, were at higher risk of ketoacidosis than those taking a placebo. Furthermore, the risk of developing the potentially life-threatening condition grew alongside the dosage amount. In the group of 117 taking the placebo, not one case of ketoacidosis was detected. In the group of 117 taking the lower, 100 mg dose of canagliflozin, five patients were found to have the condition. That number increased to seven patients in the final group of 117, all of whom had been given 300 mg doses of the medication.
