What is Viagra and How Does It Work?

Sildenafil citrate, commonly known by its brand name Viagra, is an oral prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to maintain an erection long enough for satisfactory sexual activity. In some cases, the drug may be sold under the brand name Revatio to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and improve exercise capacity in both men and women. Viagra treats ED by inhibiting the secretion of PDE5 and allowing the smooth muscles in the corpus cavernosum in the penis to relax, causing an erection.

Viagra Side Effects

Like all medications, Viagra may cause some side effects. According to labeling information provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the most common side effects of Viagra include:

  • Headache
  • Vision problems such as changes in color vision and blurred vision
  • Muscle pain
  • Rash
  • Upset stomach
  • Back pain
  • Nausea
  • Flushing
  • Dizziness

Viagra and Melanoma Studies

Melanoma is considered to be the most dangerous form of skin cancer, developing when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutations and form malignant tumors that originate in the pigment-producing melanocytes in the epidermis.

In 2011, a study published in the medical journal Cancer Cell found that the downregulation of PDE5 may stimulate a dramatic increase in melanoma cell invasion. According to a lawsuit filed in California, sildenafil (Viagra) mimics an effect of gene activation when PDE5 is inhibited and may potentially function as a trigger for the creation of melanoma cells.

Additionally, an original study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine examined a possible link between Viagra use and the risk of melanoma in men in the United States. Almost 26,000 men participated in the study in which researchers noted an 84 percent increase in the risk of developing melanoma in men who had recently taken Viagra to treat ED.

Other Viagra Risks

In rare cases, a condition in which a prolonged, painful erection lasting longer than four hours may occur in men who take Viagra to treat ED. This condition, known as priapism, can lead to permanent damage of the penis if left untreated.

Other risks may include vision impairment or vision loss in one or both eyes, a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Likewise, post-marketing surveillance side effects have included heart attack, sudden hearing loss, increased eye pressure, and ventricular arrhythmias.

Viagra Melanoma Cancer Lawsuits

Pfizer Inc., the manufacturer of Viagra, faces several Viagra melanoma cancer lawsuits. A lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York claims that the use of Viagra put him at an increased risk of developing melanoma. The plaintiff in the complaint claims that, after taking Viagra to treat ED, he began to develop suspicious lesions on his left forearm and underwent surgery to remove the lesion after a biopsy showed that his lesions were melanoma.

As a result of the severe and permanent physical and emotional injuries incurred, the plaintiff is seeking to recover damages from the maker of the drug.
