What is Xarelto?

The drug Xarelto is a blood thinner that is designed to help prevent clots from developing in the blood. Xarelto is approved for patients who have recently undergone hip or knee replacement surgery, as they can be susceptible to developing potentially life-threatening blood clots. It is also approved for patients who have a condition known as atrial fibrillation, because they have a greater risk of developing blood clots in their hearts.

Hundreds of injury reports of Xarelto injuries have come to the FDA since it was first approved in 2011. Many Xarelto lawsuits claim that the drug is particularly dangerous because there isn’t an antidote available to stop uncontrollable bleeding that can occur, and that the drug makers failed to disclose the risk of bleeding to the public.

How Does Xarelto Work?

To prevent fatal bleeding, the body forms a blood clot. In some cases, the blood does not act typically and can clot even when there is no risk of losing blood. Xarelto is intended to stop the blood from forming unnecessary clots that can cause thrombosis or stroke.

Xarelto Risks

Many blood thinners come with a side effect of bleeding. However, patients who have claimed to have been injured by Xarelto state that the drug carries a much higher risk of fatal hemorrhaging that has no way to be stopped or controlled. Other anticoagulants, like the more traditional warfarin, can be stopped with vitamin K treatments. However, there is currently no antidote to Xarelto, so there is no means to stop a fatal, uncontrollable bleed should it occur. Patients have alleged the following Xarelto risks:

  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Hematoma
  • Thrombosis
  • GI bleeding

Xarelto Lawsuit

Many Xarelto lawsuits claim that Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Healthcare were aware of the dangers of Xarelto, yet failed to disclose that to the public, and that they continued to market the drug as safe and effective despite safety concerns. In one Xarelto lawsuit, a family claimed the following:

  • Their loved one died because they did not know about bleeding risks.
  • The drug was marketed as a convenient, safe mediation.
  • The drug makers did not conduct appropriate drug trials on humans before pushing it for use by doctors.

Other Xarelto Side Effects

Like most drugs, Xarelto comes with a number of side effects. Some common Xarelto side effects include:

  • Excessive bruising
  • Dizziness
  • Swollen, bleeding gums
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Headaches
  • Bowel and bladder problems

The FDA has received more than 2,000 reports involving serious side effects from patients using Xarelto. Around 180 of these patients died as a result of their injuries. Affected patients are encouraged to seek legal counsel from an Arkansas Xarelto Lawsuit Attorney.
