Our member Arkansas Mirena IUD Attorneys at Arkansas Attorney Group are currently investigating possible lawsuits on behalf of the Mirena IUD. Deceptive tactics to market the Mirena intrauterine device has been used by its maker, Bayer Inc., and because of this, many women used this IUD without knowing its potential complications and risks, some of which are very dangerous. Injuries by the Mirena can be extremely painful and could alter the lives of victims as well their families for many years. Complications with the Mirena can include uterine perforation, ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease, amenorrhea and irregular bleeding. Women using the Mirena IUD who become pregnant at the same time may suffer a miscarriage and can put their fertility at risk.

Deception of Bayer’s Mirena

Originally approved as an intrauterine contraceptive, the Mirena IUD was later approved also as a treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding in women who already gave birth. The chemical progestogen levonorgestrel is slowly released into the uterus by the Mirena and is intended for up to 5 years of intrauterine contraception. If contraception is still desired after that point, the system needs to be replaced. Mirena is only recommended for those women who have already had at least one child. The Mirena was marketed by Bayer as a way for busy moms to simplify their lifestyle and claims misleadingly overstated Mirena’s proven efficacy. Unfortunately, many women who chose to use Mirena for its marketed convenience may not have known of its possible serious side effects and thus have suffered complications. If you or someone you care about have experienced complications after using the Mirena IUD, contact Arkansas Attorney Group.

Side Effects of the Mirena

Since the approval of the Mirena, serious side effects have included intrauterine pregnancies (pregnancies within the uterus while the IUD was in place), ectopic pregnancies, group A streptococcal sepsis, embedment of the IUD in the uterine wall, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and perforation of the cervix or uterine wall. Other common side effects of the Mirena include irregular bleeding or spotting, ovarian cysts, headaches, painful menstruation, vaginitis, breast tenderness and pelvic pain. According to Health Canada, the Canadian regulatory agency, Bayer Inc. still continues to receive reports of uterine perforation linked to the use of the Mirena.
