Report: High Surf Hampered Search-Debris Only Found

CNN.com reports that the 12 missing members of the U.S. Marine Corps were declared dead a week after two helicopters carrying them crashed off the coast of Hawaii on January, 14, 2016. The Marine Corps changed the status of the Marines to deceased after five days of search and rescue operations. High surf conditions and a green laser from an unidentified source are among the complications the U.S. Coast Guard faced as it searched for the missing marines near the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

Despite initial reports that the two downed helicopters collided in midair and a witness’s description of viewing a “fireball” in the sky, little is currently known about the cause of the missing helicopters. The marines onboard the two aircraft were participating in a nighttime training drill when they went down near what is thought to be the north shore of Oahu. Rescuers aboard two separate aircrafts reported debris in the water several miles off the island’s coast, the website reported.
