Report: 40,000 TVM Lawsuits Are Still Pending Against the Device Maker

Between 2,000 and 3,000 women who filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson over personal injuries allegedly caused by defective vaginal mesh inserts will reportedly receive compensation under a January 2016 deal. The settlement, which is worth more than $120 million in total, will provide each plaintiff with up to $60,000, according to New Brunswick Today. This represents the first large-scale settlement that Johnson & Johnson has offered in these cases, but still, over 42,000 other vaginal mesh lawsuits remain unresolved.

The products liability lawsuits pending against Johnson & Johnson allege that the vaginal mesh inserts manufactured by the company’s subsidiary Ethicon were defective and eroded within patients’ bodies. As a result, the plaintiffs suffered organ damage, constant pain and severe emotional distress. Some of the plaintiffs also had to undergo multiple revision surgeries to remove the defective mesh implants. Consequently, many plaintiffs whose cases have not been resolved are seeking punitive as well as compensatory damages, the website reported.
