20 Victims Died of Overdoses

According to the LA Times, the doctor, who was called the “Candy Man,” began offering drug management services to patients after building a successful practice caring for older people. Patients received prescriptions for painkillers such as Dilaudid and Oxycontin, using cash to pay for the appointment. Two women said that they obtained their prescription by offering the doctor sex. During a period of two years, it was estimated that 410 patients of the doctor were treated for drug intoxication at a local emergency room.

After the deaths of several patients and multiple complaints from medical professionals, the doctor was arrested and convicted on 79 counts of writing prescriptions for painkillers without a legitimate medical purpose. His patients typically paid cash and were willing to wait hours for a 10-minute appointment, and as many as 20 subsequently died of overdoses, the website reported.
