Byetta, a medication prescribed to type 2 diabetes patients to help them to better manage their blood sugar levels, is manufactured and marketed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005. Many patients have allegedly developed pancreatic cancer and other complications after taking this drug. What is Byetta?

Byetta is designed to stimulate the production of insulin within the patient’s pancreas so that his or her body can more efficiently regulate his or her blood sugar levels. Between 2005 and 2008, Amylin Pharmaceuticals reportedly grossed $700 million from sales of the product, despite the possible relationship between the medication and pancreatic cancer.

While pancreatitis is often treatable if caught early, the symptoms of pancreatitis can be difficult to discern, so many patients reportedly had the condition but were unaware of its development until the disease progressed into its later stages when symptoms became more noticeable. As a result, many allegedly suffered from life-threatening side effects as a result of the medication, resulting in many patients filing lawsuits against Amylin Pharmaceuticals to seek compensation for their injuries.

Other possible complications include immunogenicity, hypersensitivity, renal impairment, hypoglycemia and kidney failure or damage. Additionally, patients have reportedly suffered from elevated respiratory and heart rates, chest and abdominal pain, unstable blood pressure and vomiting, nausea and headaches.

The FDA warned the public in October 2007 of the potential dangers of Byetta, including the risk of pancreatitis, after 30 adverse event reports were submitted to the agency. The following year, the agency required an update to the product’s warning label after it reportedly received six reports of pancreatitis and two fatalities.

Byetta Lawsuits in the U.S.

Patients who have taken Byetta and developed pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis and other health conditions are filing lawsuits against the manufacturer to recover damages for the injuries allegedly caused by the medication. Plaintiffs accuse Amylin Pharmaceuticals of failing to warn the medical and public communities of the potential dangers and risks of Byetta in an effort to maintain their profits from the product. Patients also allege that the company did not notify medical professionals of the importance of monitoring and testing patients for changes within the pancreas that could indicte pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer or other complications.

You may be eligible to file a New York Byetta lawsuit if you developed a condition while taking Byetta that you feel was caused by the medication. Plaintiffs claim that, had they been informed of the risks and side effects prior to using the medication, they might not have developed complications and would have instead been able to make informed decisions about the product.
