Patients with kidney problems are often required to undergo a dialysis treatment in which they are given products to assist them in detoxifying their bodies. GranuFlo, a dry powder given to patients throughout the U.S., is manufactured and marketed by Fresenius Medical Care and is one such product intended to help to detoxify the kidneys during a dialysis procedure.

However, many patients have allegedly suffered from heart attacks, strokes and death after they underwent dialysis treatments. GranuFlo Side Effects and Complications

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I warning in 2011 for GranuFlo, informing dialysis clinics in the U.S. of the possible relationship between GranuFlo and heart attacks, heart arrhythmia, strokes and death. Its manufacturer subsequently recalled the product in 2012. If you experienced low oxygen, potassium or blood pressure levels or if you suffered a heart attack or stroke after you received GranuFlo, you may be eligible to file a New York GranuFlo lawsuit.

Plaintiffs File GranuFlo Lawsuits to Seek Compensation

According to researchers, patients who were given GranuFlo were between six and eight times more likely to suffer from cardiac complications than patients who did not use GranuFlo. Those who have developed problems as a result of the product have begun to file lawsuits against Fresenius Medical Care in an attempt to recover damages for their injuries.

As of June 2014, more than 1,860 lawsuits are pending in the U.S. District of Massachusetts, according to court documents. The claims accuse Fresenius of failing to warn of the dangers associated with GranuFlo and a similar product, NaturaLyte. Additionally, the manufacturer is accused of continuing to sell GranuFlo despite having received information of injuries and complications.

Fresenius issued warnings to its own dialysis centers in the U.S. but allegedly failed to notify clinics outside of its own network, placing thousands of patients at risk for complications. After the FDA eventually received word of the memo sent to Fresenius-owned centers, the agency took the warning and transformed it into a Class I recall of the product.

Dialysis patients who claim to have suffered a heart attack, stroke or other complication following a GranuFlo or NaturaLyte dialysis treatment may be eligible to file a New York GranuFlo lawsuit and are urged to seek legal counsel to learn more about their options. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the injuries, patients may be entitled to recover damages for lost wages, medical expenses and pain and suffering.
