First introduced in 2010, Pradaxa was designed to help to reduce a patient’s risk of a stroke or heart attack if he or she requires a hip or knee replacement or other procedure that may increase the likelihood of the formation of blood clots. However, Pradaxa may cause internal bleeding, as it works as a blood thinner, and there is not currently an antidote available to reverse its anticlotting effects.

Pradaxa Overview

According to the manufacturer, Pradaxa thins the patient’s blood to reduce the formation of blood clots and, subsequently, the patient’s risk of a stroke, heart attack or death. However, shortly after Pradaxa’s release, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reportedly began to receive adverse event claims submitted by Pradaxa users in which patients suffered from internal bleeding.

Pradaxa is comparable to warfarin, arguably the most popular and wellknown blood thinner. However, several experts within the medical community argue that Pradaxa is slightly more dangerous than warfarin as it has not yet been released with an antidote. The effects of warfarin, on the other hand, can be reversed with a vitamin K injection. The Institute for Safe Medication Practice reports that Pradaxa users may be five times more likely of dying as a result of internal bleeding complications than those who take warfarin.

Risks and Side Effects

Since Pradaxa was approved in 2010, more than 12,494 injuries and 1,158 fatalities have allegedly been caused by the medication. According to patients and the medical community, Pradaxa may cause gastrointestinal ulcers, vomiting, GERD, abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea and vomiting as well as several other milder side effects. However, you may be eligible to file a New York Pradaxa lawsuit if you suffered from one or more of the following symptoms of internal bleeding:

  • Pink or dark urine
  • Coughing up blood
  • Easy or unusual bruising
  • Fainting, dizziness, headaches
  • Coffee groundcolored or bloody vomit
  • Frequent, persistent nosebleeds
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Prolonged or heavy bleeding or menstrual flow
