According to Intuitive Surgical, Inc., its da Vinci Surgical System is designed to provide patients with several benefits over traditional surgical methods, including less pain, reduced blood loss, quicker recovery times, and smaller incisions. However, despite the ergonomic console for the surgeon, the robotic arms, the high-performance vision system, and the EndoWrist instruments, the da Vinci robot has allegedly caused painful and unnecessary injuries to its patients.

What Happens During a Da Vinci Procedure?

The surgeon places himself at a console where he can direct the robot using a joystick-like control. When the surgeon moves the joystick, the device transforms these movements into motions of the robotic arm. Intuitive Surgical reports that out of the 2,000 medical facilities that currently offer a da Vinci-assisted procedure, more than 1,300 are located in the U.S. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the da Vinci robot in 2000, and the system was the first of its kind approved for soft-tissue procedures, prostate removal surgeries, and gynecological procedures.
Intuitive Surgical reportedly offered to pay for a two-day training class for two surgeons at each hospital; it was then up to the facility to determine whether it wanted to pay for additional training. According to several critics, this two-day session was not enough to adequately teach surgeons how to properly and safely operate the device.

Plaintiffs Name Intuitive Surgical in Lawsuits

Patients who suffered from burns, damage to their bowels, or cut ureters are urged to seek legal counsel to determine whether they are entitled to file a New York da Vinci robot lawsuit and seek compensation for their injuries. Plaintiffs in the U.S. who are currently pursuing claims against Intuitive Surgical allege that the robotic arm may burn, cut, or cauterize nearby organs or tissues without warning. This allegedly occurs because the electric current may not be adequately contained within the arm at all times. Other patients have reportedly suffered from injured bladders, vaginal cuffs, arteries, and blood vessels.
More than 500 adverse event reports pertaining to the da Vinci Surgical System have been submitted to the FDA since January 2012. According to many of these claims, Intuitive Surgical allegedly withheld pertinent information about the possible dangers and risks associated with its device. Several plaintiffs report that, had they been aware of the potential for complications, they would have opted for a more traditional surgery instead.
