Many Americans undergo hip replacement procedures each year. While most enjoy increased mobility following these surgeries, others have allegedly noticed an increased difficulty when standing or moving, more pain, and other complications. Wright Medical Technology is now one of several medical device manufacturers facing lawsuits filed on behalf of plaintiffs who allegedly suffered from defective hip replacement devices.

Attorney Group for New York can help potential plaintiffs determine if they are eligible to file a New York Wright Conserve lawsuit. Call today if you or someone you love was fitted with a Wright Conserve device and subsequently suffered from metal poisoning, early device failure, or other complications.

Overview of the Wright Conserve Hip System

Since the Wright Conserve line of hip implants was first introduced in the U.S., more than 200 adverse event reports were submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by Conserve recipients. Following these reports, patients began to seek legal counsel to file lawsuits against Wright, alleging that its Conserve line was defective and prone to premature failure. According to the National Joint Registry for England and Wales (NJR), only DePuy’s ASR hip implant was found to have worse revision rates.

According to Wright, its Conserve line includes three separate devices, each of which includes four metal-on-metal parts. These include a modular neck, a Conserve cup, a femoral head, and a femoral stem. The three devices in this particular line of implants include the Conserve Total Hip System with BFH Technology, the Conserve Femoral Surface Replacement, and the Conserve Total A-Class Advanced Metal with BFH Technology Hip System.

As is the case with most metal-on-metal hip replacement devices, Wright’s Conserve line includes a metal femoral cup and a metal ball. The two metal components fit together inside the device and can potentially grate against each other, causing metal shards to be released into the recipient’s bloodstream and surrounding tissue. Should this occur, the patient may suffer from early device failure, infection, inflammation, pseudotumors, tissue death, biologic toxicity, and metal poisoning. All of the pending federal court lawsuits involving the Wright Conserve line of hip replacement devices were transferred to the Northern District of Georgia in February 2011 for consolidated pretrial proceeding.
