The manufacturer of the allegedly defective airbags, Takata Corp., may be facing lawsuits filed on behalf of drivers and passengers who were reportedly injured by the company’s product. According to reports, the airbags were supplied to more than 10 car manufacturers since 2001, including Chrysler, Toyota, BMW, Subaru, Nissan, Honda, Ford, and Mazda.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a statement on October 20, 2014 in which officials acknowledged that faulty propellant may increase the likelihood that the airbags will rip when they deploy in an accident, and passengers and drivers are at risk of becoming injured or killed due to metal shards and fragments that fly out of the airbags.

The agency has also urged vehicle owners of cars involved in the recall to visit their local dealers as soon as possible to repair the airbags and eliminate the risk of further injury or death. Toyota is reportedly taking the recall seriously, and has begun to conduct its own investigation to determine the effect the airbags will have on its cars and customers.

While the NHTSA is still analyzing data and determining the source of the alleged problem, 4.7 million vehicles have been pulled in the U.S. with more than 12 million worldwide. According to the NHTSA, consumers in warmer climates, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Florida, Guam, Puerto Rico, Texas, and other regions in which high temperatures and humidity are common should heed the recall warning, as warm weather may increase the likelihood of the airbags tearing upon deployment.

Those who have been injured or lost a loved one due to the allegedly defective airbags may consider filing a New York defective airbag lawsuit against to recover damages such as pain and suffering, loss of income, and medical expenses, including medications, rehabilitation, medical care, and other costs incurred as a result of the product. For this reason, it is important to seek legal counsel to determine whether you have a case.
Although a recall has already been used for millions of cars, experts speculate the recall may grow as additional information surfaces following Toyota’s and the NHTSA’s investigations of the allegedly defective airbags.
