Industrial Accident: Plant Explosion Being Investigated

A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives stated that blast occurred on April 16, 2014 in McEwen at the Rio Ammunition plant in a part of the facility that transported smokeless powder into a hopper.

According to ATF investigators, the accident was determined to be non-criminal in nature, and officials deemed it to be an industrial accident explosion. The ATF also stated that human factors played a role in the explosion but refrained from providing additional details. The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration plans to conduct an investigation into the cause of the blast.

One man died the same day the industrial accident occurred after being airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, 50 miles east of McEwen. A second man was also airlifted to the same hospital and has been upgraded from critical condition to stable, according to a spokesman for the hospital. Two others who were injured in the blast have since been released from the medical facility.
