One Patient Claims Site Infection Required Fifteen Additional Surgeries

More than a dozen patients have filed lawsuits against 3M, the maker of a popular hospital patient-warming device, alleging it left them with infections severe enough to warrant amputations and numerous corrective surgeries. According to OutPatientSurgery.net, the device in question, the Bair Hugger warming blanket, is currently the best-selling device of its kind in the United States, but one of its staunchest opponents is an unexpected one: its own inventor.

Bair Hugger’s inventor contends that, not only is there a connection between the blanket and the risk of surgical infection, but also that the blanket’s marketer allegedly knew of the connection and tried to hide it. The inventor alleges the company feared that sales would suffer if word got out about the enhanced medical risk; a claim the company denies.  While the conditions of all of the plaintiffs are not currently known, one patient who used the blanket after undergoing hip surgery had a surgical site infection severe enough to require 15 additional surgeries, the website reported.
