Tennessee Victoza Lawsuit

Tennessee Victoza lawsuit attorneys are currently investigating potential claims from plaintiffs alleging side effects from the popular type 2 diabetes medication, Victoza. Approved on January 25, 2010 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Victoza is a oncedaily, injectable drug used by those living with type 2 diabetes. While many patients have taken the drug successfully and reported little or no side effects, Victoza has been linked to numerous side effects that can cause permanent disability, organ failure and death such as pancreatitis, renal failure and thyroid cancer.

If you or a loved one have taken Victoza and have been diagnosed with a serious and lifethreatening health condition that you feel is the result of the medication, Tennessee Victoza lawsuit attorneys can review your case and help you to seek compensation for your injuries.

Victoza Lawsuits

Plaintiffs filing lawsuits against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Victoza, are seeking compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills, emotional distress and other damages. While no amount of money can make up for pain and injuries allegedly caused by Victoza, compensation can help to provide plaintiffs with the funds they need to regain their health and rebuild their lives. Victoza, a HighlyPrescribed Medication

Liraglutide, the active ingredient in Victoza, functions in a similar way as a glucagonlike peptide1 (GLP1), which helps to promote insulin secretion and glucose metabolization. According to Novo Nordisk, the medication is designed to help prevent the overproduction of sugar while relieving insulin deficiencies in those living with type 2 diabetes. According to court records, Victoza has become one of the most popular diabetes medications on the market since its 2010 approval, racking up sales that totaled over $670 million in 2011 alone.

However, potential Tennessee Victoza lawsuit attorneys and plaintiffs across the country assert that the drug was controversial even before it received its FDA approval. By allowing the drug to be placed onto the market, the FDA allegedly ignored the recommendation of three safety reviewers. In clinical trials, researchers noted that patients were more likely to suffer from an inflammation of the pancreas, or pancreatitis, while taking Victoza when compared to other similar diabetes medications.

Additionally, high doses of the drug allegedly caused thyroid tumors in laboratory rodents, although the FDA was quoted as saying that those results are not necessarily conclusive of a similar effect in humans. However, the safety reviewers claimed that because there were over 10 different medications currently on the market, there was no urgency to approve one more without conducting further trials.

Still, the FDA approved the medication, despite mounting concerns. A director inside the agency’s office overruled the other staff yet requested that Novo Nordisk conduct a fiveyear study to examine Victoza’s potential link to allergic reactions, low blood sugar levels, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer and other health conditions. If you have been suffering from serious health complications, you may be entitled to seek compensation with the assistance of Tennessee Victoza lawsuit attorneys.

Victoza and Cancers

The FDA issued a warning in June 2011 notifying the public of Victoza’s possible link to thyroid cancer. According to documents, the agency had received over 25 claims of thyroid cancer in patients taking Victoza from February 2010 to September 2011. Plaintiffs may consider consulting with Tennessee Victoza lawsuit attorneys if they have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer while taking the medication.

The thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, produces the hormones responsible for regulating blood pressure, heart rate, body weight and temperature. Symptoms that may indicate thyroid cancer include:

  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Lump in the neck

Similarly, a warning was added to the label of Victoza in May 2011 pertaining to the medication’s alleged link with renal impairment. The notification states that the condition has been reported following postmarketing trials and is often associated with diarrhea, nausea, dehydration and vomiting. If you have suffered from these or other side effects, Tennessee Victoza lawsuit attorneys can help.

The FDA also reported receipt of 200 cases of acute pancreatitis and 28 cases of pancreatic cancer in patients taking Victoza, according to the same June 2011 communication that discussed the medication’s link to thyroid cancer. According to experts, acute pancreatitis can cause organ damage and may often be fatal if not found and properly treated.
