Mirena, an Intrauterine Device (IUD), a birth control device which is a Bayer product that was supposed to be one of today’s medical miracles, now turning into one of today’s medical tragedies, and being amongst an ever growing lawsuit soap opera of modern times because of its serious side effects endangering women across the country. IUD’s were first introduced in the early 70’s as a birth control device but are more commonly used in modern times, more medical companies have since introduced their own IUD products, such as Bayer with their Mirena IUD.

In the early 90’s Mirena was introduced to the public as an alternative for women who wanted a contraceptive that was long lasting and made them still feel like a woman. Mirena was marketed towards women who didn’t want children but still wanted to be sexually active but may not have been informed of the serious side effects that the product may have caused. When Bayer marketed Mirena, they had a scripted nurse recommending women to use Mirena under the pretense that the product would make them feel more intimate, romantic, and spontaneous making it a way for them to reconnect with their partners. In 2009, the FDA sent out letters to Bayer stating that there was no evidence supporting these claims and that certain side effects have been omitted from the public. Some of the side effects omitted were Uterine perforation, embedment in the uterine wall, intestinal perforations or obstructions, and several other side effects.
