Battery Quality May Be Responsible for Fires and Explosions

Citing the threat of battery fires and explosions, several retailers and manufacturers have now issued recalls that affect over 500,000 hoverboards. West Virginia Public Broadcasting reports that hoverboards have caused burn injuries to multiple users, and there are at least 99 reported cases of the batteries inside these boards sparking, overheating, catching fire or even exploding. A number of these issues may be attributable to the use of low-quality lithium-ion batteries, which may not adequately contain the flammable material that is normally present inside a lithium-ion battery.

The full list of these recalls, which were announced in early July, is available on the website of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC urges people who own recalled hoverboards to cease using them immediately and contact the manufacture for redress. Even if a recall has not been issued, the CPSC recommends that hoverboard owners reach out to the appropriate manufacturer and request refunds.
