Research Yields New Insights into Risks Linked to Nexium

A Virginia Nexium lawyer notes a study that suggests the heartburn medication and other PPIs may cause premature damage and aging to blood vessel cells when used in the long term. An estimated one in 14 Americans use proton pump inhibitors (PPI) to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, also referred to as heartburn or acid reflux. Affected patients and their families may be eligible to file a lawsuit and recover compensation for their injuries by filing a Virginia Nexium lawsuit.

Researchers: More Research Needed for Nexium and Other PPIs

New research has revealed a potential mechanism of action to explain the observed correlation between PPIs and various serious health problems, including renal failure, heart disease and dementia. Fox News reports that the study examined the direct effects of Nexium and a second proton pump inhibitor (PPI) on the cells that line blood vessels. The researchers found that these cells apparently experienced accelerated aging as a result of damage to their lysosomes, which are organelles that digest material and remove waste from cells.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Nexium and other PPIs to be used for four weeks at a time, and the researchers note that the drugs may be safe when these guidelines are followed. However, it’s not uncommon for patients to take PPIs for significantly longer periods of time, putting themselves at risk for cellular damage and various associated health problems. Consequently, the researchers note that changes to the way that these drugs are dispensed may be necessary, as may further research into the risks of long-term PPI use, the website reports.

How a Virginia Nexium Lawyer Can Help

Drug makers have a duty to provide safe products. If there are risks of harm associated with their products, they also must provide adequate warnings. If a drug maker fails to fulfill this duty, it could be held liable in lawsuits for injuries that may result.

People injured by bad drugs may be eligible to recover money for:

  • Medical Expenses
  • Lost Wages
