$7.8 Million Risperdal Settlement Reached With State of Arkansas

According to a Bloomberg Business article, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will pay $7.8 million to settle the state of Arkansas’s claims that it illegally marketed Risperdal, an antipsychotic medication. The Risperdal settlement was reached amidst ongoing Risperdal lawsuits filed against J&J by young males in Arkansas and other states who claim that the drug caused them to suffer gynecomastia, or abnormal male breast growth.

What is Risperdal?

Risperdal is an antipsychotic drug approved for treating schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and irritability linked to autism in children ages six to 16. While Risperdal has been on the market since 1996, it wasn’t until 2006 that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Risperdal in children. Risperidone, the active ingredient in Risperdal, works by altering the brain’s levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters associated with affecting behavior and mood.

Risperdal Settlements Reached in Other States

According to the Bloomberg Business report, J&J reached a settlement for $158 million in 2012 to resolve the state of Texas’ claims against the drug maker regarding the marketing of Risperdal, and claims are reportedly still being pursued by the states of Mississippi and Kentucky. A Risperdal settlement was reached with the federal government for $2.2 billion to resolve claims regarding marketing practices for the drug.

Injured Patients May be Eligible for Compensation

If a patient took Risperdal and experienced abnormal male breast growth, he may be entitled to compensation, including past and future medical expenses, pain, suffering, and mental anguish associated with gynecomastia, scarring and disfigurement from medical treatment, and lost income.
