More than 180 motorists had to be rescued when a California snow storm brought winter weather to the San Bernardino Mountains on New Year’s Eve. During the storm, wind advisories were posted across the Southland with gusts up to 70 miles per hour in mountain passes and up to 57 miles per hour in Fremont County. Malibu Hills experienced winds over 70 miles per hour as well. The heavy snow combined with high wind gusts made roads impassable in the area.
Stranded Motorists
According to police, firefighters worked to free trapped drivers, completing the operation at around 3 AM. There were 136 people rescued on State Highway 138 near Crestline and Mt. Baldy, which is located about 50 miles from Los Angeles. Firefighters used SnowCats to navigate snowy switchbacks during the California snow storm to bring motorists to safety. There were no serious injuries reported and those rescued were transferred to the First Baptist Church in Crestline where the Red Cross provided aid.
More than a foot of snow fell during the storm, which was caused by an arctic air mass, and high winds caused drifts on area roadways that stranded motorists. According to weather experts, lower elevations sustained severe wind damage while upper elevations had heavy snow that delayed traffic and caused many road closures. More than 12 inches of snow fell in Palomar while Julian, California reported as much as nine inches of snow.
Other Damages
In addition to the rescue of stranded motorists, thousands were without power due to downed trees and power lines during the California snow storm. Two people died when ice and snow brought down trees in two separate incidents. Three deaths occurred in Catalina, two in water-related accidents and one when a large pine tree fell on a home.
People Must Still be Careful During Winter Weather Events
Whereas nature caused much damage to people and property during the California snow storm, such acts of nature do not relieve people of their duty to use care when driving or working in winter weather events. Adverse winter weather conditions often heighten the care that people must use, and those who fail to use proper care and cause injury to others may be responsible for the damage they cause.
