About Byetta

Byetta and other incretin mimetics are designed to stimulate the pancreas to increase insulin production when the patient’s blood sugar drops. Between 2005 and 2008, Amylin Pharmaceuticals grossed $700 million from Byetta sales, despite mounting research indicating a possible relationship between Byetta and pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Other alleged complications include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Chest and abdominal pain
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Renal impairment
  • Immunogenicity
  • Elevated respiratory and heart rates
  • Acute necrotizing pancreatitis
  • Kidney damage or failure
  • Unstable blood pressure
  • Vomiting, headaches, and nausea

By October 2007, the FDA had reportedly received 30 separate reports through its Adverse Event Reporting System from patients who had allegedly developed pancreatitis while taking Byetta. At this point, the agency issued a safety notification to inform the public of this potential relationship. In 2008, the decision was made to revise Byetta’s label after six more reports of pancreatitis, including two deaths, were submitted to the FDA.

Plaintiffs Pursue Claims for Compensation

Due to Byetta’s potential link to pancreatitis and other life-threatening health complications, Byetta patients throughout the U.S. are currently pursuing claims against Amylin Pharmaceuticals to recover damages for their injuries. Plaintiffs accuse the manufacturer of failing to adequately warn of the possible connection between Byetta and pancreatic cancer and of neglecting to thoroughly test the product before releasing it to the public.

Plaintiffs also claim that Amylin did not warn healthcare providers about the importance of monitoring their patients for changes of the pancreas that could indicate pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer. If you have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer or you suffered from other health complications while taking Byetta, you may be entitled to file a Colorado Byetta lawsuit and seek compensation for your injuries.
