Research Suggests A Link Between ADHD And Traumatic Brain Injury

A study suggests there may be a link between attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), as it was discovered that children with traumatic brain injuries are at a higher risk of developing attention problems than those who suffer injuries to other parts of the body, brain Injury lawyers note.

If you or a loved one sustained a traumatic head injury due to the negligence or fault of another, you may be entitled to file a lawsuit and recover compensation for your condition. Brain Injuries Lead to More Problems in Kids

ADHD research was conducted in The Netherlands and the study involved two groups of injured children. According to Reuters, the first group consisted of 53 children whose injury did not involve their head. The second group was made up of 113 children with traumatic brain injury. Twenty-four of the children in this group had a TBI that was considered mild while the other 91 children had a more severe injury. Each group was administered IQ tests, and their teachers and parents were asked to rate issues that occurred in their child.

Children in the first group were found to have less problems than the children in the second group. The second group had higher rates of aggression, anxiety, lower IQ scores, slower time to react to things and problems with paying attention. Unfortunately, according to the researchers, the kinds of daily life problems caused by attention deficits are numerous and an impulsive child who is aggressive will have difficulty with relationships and with school performance as well as having a difficult time participating in extracurricular activities. The examinations of the children in both groups were conducted about a year and a half from the date the injury occurred, the website reported.

Injured Patients May be Eligible for Compensation

Those who have sustained a serious or life-threatening brain injury due to the fault of another may consider seeking legal counsel from a brain injury lawyer to learn more about pursuing a claim and recovering compensation for their suffering. Compensation can be based on factors including:

  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish from an injury
  • Loss of income or ability to work due to loss of mobility

If a loved one dies after complications from a brain injury, family members may be able to pursue claims for wrongful death damages, including:

  • Conscious pain and suffering of a loved one prior to death
  • Loss of financial support
  • Pain, suffering, and mental anguish resulting from the loss of a loved one

Affected patients and their families are encouraged to seek the advice of a brain injury attorney to discuss their legal rights and options for compensation.
