Truck Driver Reportedly in Violation of State Law

Authorities in Hickman County, Tennessee, are saying a semi-truck driver was in direct violation of the “Move Over Law” when he plowed into a group of road workers who had pulled over due to a flat tire. According to WKRN, charges have not yet been filed in connection with the accident, which claimed the life of one and sent several others to hospitals with injuries, but are likely forthcoming.

The fatality is the fourth suffered by workers with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) within the last five years. It is not yet known what caused the truck driver to swerve over to the right side of the road where the workers had stopped, though all three TDOT emergency vehicles were said to have had emergency lights flashing. The extent of the injuries suffered by two other TDOT workers is also unknown, as are those suffered by the truck driver, whose vehicle overturned as a result of the impact.

How a Tennessee Truck Accident Attorney Can Help

Truck drivers and trucking companies have a duty to make sure that they operate and maintain their vehicles in a safe manner. If this duty is not fulfilled, a big rig accident may occur, and the truck driver or trucking company can be held liable for injuries that may result.

Drivers or passengers who are injured in a big rig accident may be entitled to compensation for damages resulting from their injuries, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages
  • Scarring and disfigurement

The families of those killed may be eligible to recover money for funeral expenses and the pain that comes with losing a loved one.

People who have been injured in a truck accident are advised to seek the advice of an experienced tractor trailer injury lawyer to help them protect their legal rights.
