Federal Agency Suggests the Need for Ongoing Monitoring of E-Cigs
A Seattle hospital, Harborview Medical Center, has reported a significant increase in burn injuries involving electronic cigarette batteries that exploded or ignited. As The Seattle Times reports, from fall 2015 to June 2016, a total of 14 people sustained e-cigarette burn injuries severe enough to merit treatment or hospitalization at the center. Many of the victims suffered serious chemical burns in addition to thermal burns, and most were reportedly not aware that these injuries could result from the use of e-cigarettes.
An increasing number of people may be at risk for these injuries as e-cigarette use grows. Altogether, about one out of twenty-five adults in the United States use these devices habitually, and about 13 percent have tried them before. Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that related burn injuries might be becoming more prevalent. A reported 92 e-cigarette burn injuries occurred from 2009 to September 2015. By January 2015, an additional 40 injuries had occurred, causing the overall number of injuries to jump 40 percent. The FDA states that some events have resulted in life-threatening injury, permanent disfigurement or disability and major property damage, suggesting the need for ongoing surveillance and risk mitigation, the website reported.
