According to court documents, over 7 million prescriptions were filled for the popular type 2 diabetes medication Byetta in just 2008 alone. While the drug has become well-known in the medical community, experts and physicians have expressed concerns that Byetta may cause pancreatic cancer, liver cancer and thyroid cancer, among other complications. If you were diagnosed with a serious condition while taking Byetta, consider contacting an Alabama Byetta lawyer to learn more about your rights.

Between 2005 and 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received 62 cases of kidney failure and 78 adverse event reports alleging that Byetta caused kidney damage. Additionally, the FDA acknowledged receipt of 30 separate cases of pancreatitis in type 2 diabetes patients using Byetta to manage their blood glucose levels.

In 2009, it was determined that GLP-1 drugs including Byetta could cause pre-cancerous cell changes in the pancreas, or pancreatic duct metaplasia – a condition which can develop into pancreatic cancer. A clinical trial was published two years later in 2011, concluding that Byetta and Januvia users were at a six-fold risk of suffering from acute pancreatitis than type 2 diabetes patients who chose alternative medications for their condition. Additionally, researchers concluded in the same study that Byetta users were 2.9 times more likely to suffer from pancreatic cancer during or following a Byetta treatment.

In 2012, 1,733 adverse event reports were submitted to the FDA alleging pancreatitis out of a total of 38,730 claims involving the medication. Court documents suggest that Byetta may have been the leading cause of over 375 fatalities of type 2 diabetes patients. An additional study was published that reported 145 instances of pancreatitis in 1,269 participants with type 2 diabetes. According to results, 87 of the 145 diagnosed with pancreatitis were taking Byetta or Januvia.

Common side effects reported by type 2 diabetes patients taking Byetta include claims of abdominal pain, nausea and fever. However, Byetta may also cause more serious complications such as thyroid, liver and pancreatic cancer as well as kidney failure and acute pancreatitis. If you have experienced one or more of these side effects, seek legal counsel from an Alabama Byetta lawyer for assistance in filing a lawsuit and recovering compensation for your injuries.
