It was reported that the train was on a run from Ventura County to Los Angeles when it collided with the truck. The driver, who was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, was reportedly found in distress over a mile from the scene of the crash. Police said the man was taken into custody.

The Metrolink train can cruise at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour, but had reportedly slowed significantly before the collision. A long expanse of straight track apparently allowed the conductor to see the tractor-trailer and anticipate the crash from a distance. Four of the train’s cars were derailed, three of which fell over once off the tracks, and the commercial truck was engulfed in flames.

California train accident attorneys note that the February 24 accident is not the first on that same stretch of track. In 2008, the Los Angeles Times reported a train crash that left 25 dead and 135 injured.

Following train accidents, those who are injured or loved ones of those killed can seek legal counsel to determine whether they are eligible to a pursue a claim for compensation. A lawsuit can allow injured parties to recover damages including medical expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, and more.
