What is GranuFlo?
GranuFlo is a dialysate that is used to help cleanse the blood during the process of dialysis treatments. It is, essentially, a bag of dry acid that contains body-helping electrolytes to help the blood begin getting clean through dialysis. When the blood comes from the body, it is sent through a solution of GranuFlo or other dialysates that will help cleanse the blood of disease and other impurities that patients who are receiving dialysis are often not able to do. GranuFlo is very quick at creating bicarbonate and can send it back into the body at a very fast rate. Often, this large amount of bicarbonate is allegedly what causes the various issues and problems patients experience with GranuFlo.
In 2003, Fresnius released GranuFlo after being approved by the FDA. After this release, starting in 2004, the company’s dialysis centers began seeing a high rise in bicarbonate levels but nothing was done, according to reports. Reportedly, they saw no need for alarm at that point in time. This went on until around 2010, when the company received a warning letter from the FDA stating that the side effects and adverse problems patients were experiencing were not stated in the list of side effects. They also received the warning because they did not have a stable complaint system for people experiencing adverse affects. When there was an internal review of the company in 2011 it was found that 941 patients had died due to reasons that were recorded as being related to GranuFlo. This prompted the FDA to issue a recall in 2012, which did not require the company to stop selling GranuFlo but to warn patients that had been using GranuFlo and to post new warnings on the packaging of the chemical.
As stated above, the alleged problem with GranuFlo is the high levels of bicarbonate it causes in the blood. It is not the actual chemicals in the GranuFlo, but rather, what it does to the blood and the levels of bicarbonate that it creates. This high level can often lead to an overdose of bicarbonate, which will lead to various problems including heart issues, breathing issues and even death. Bicarbonate is considered a good chemical for cleaning the blood during a dialysis session, but it is not good to have in large amounts. Like almost any type of chemical, it is very possible and even probable for patients to overdose on large amounts of bicarbonate.
The high levels of bicarbonate in the blood will lead to a bicarbonate overdose that can cause metabolic alkalosis. This is basically a condition that causes heart issues, metabolism issues and even respiratory issues. The metabolic alkalosis can lead to low blood pressure, heart attack, arrhythmia and even death. These problems are not normal side effects and were not originally reported by the company that creates GranuFlo. If you or a loved one have been receiving dialysis treatments with the use of GranuFlo and have experienced any of the preceding side effects, it may have been caused by the use of GranuFlo throughout the dialysis treatment. You may be entitled to a Louisiana GranuFlo lawsuit.
The majority of the GranuFlo lawsuits have been by people that were injured and believe it was caused by over-production the chemical produced during the use of GranuFlo, bicarbonate. Many people have suffered heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular problems after using this drug during dialysis, and are claiming GranuFlo is the reason. While it has impacted many individuals, there have been over 900 documented deaths that lawsuits are attributing to GranuFlo. Family members and other loved ones have also created lawsuits against the creators claiming a loved one died after using GranuFlo, therefore claiming wrongful death compensation. These types of lawsuits help families by giving monetary support for things that required them to pay out of pocket during the death.
