Pradaxa Overview

Pradaxa, upon its release in 2010, was intended to prevent strokes from occurring and blood clots from forming in patients undergoing hip and knee surgeries as well as those living with atrial fibrillation. Additionally, many physicians have prescribed Pradaxa to reduce the risk of potentially dangerous blood clots from traveling to the brain.

However, despite many patients reporting success with the medication, others are currently filing lawsuits against the manufacturer, and concerns have arisen as to whether Pradaxa is more dangerous than other blood thinners as evident by its alleged potential to cause internal bleeding.

Plaintiffs Allege Serious Side Effects

Pradaxa, like other anticoagulants, thins the blood to prevent clots. However, a common side effect of these medications is an increased risk of internal bleeding. Pradaxa may be more dangerous than other blood thinners since its manufacturer did not release an antidote with the medication to counteract its anticlotting effects.

If you believe you are bleeding internally or have been diagnosed with a serious condition, consider filing an Oklahoma Pradaxa lawsuit to seek compensation for your injuries. Side effects include:

  • Pink or dark urine
  • Blood or dark brown vomit
  • Bleeding from cuts or gums
  • Black, tarry or bloody stools
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Persistent tiredness
  • Unusual weakness
  • Headaches
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual flow
  • Frequent nosebleeds

The FDA received 542 claims filed by surviving family members of patients who allegedly died due to complications sustained while taking Pradaxa. Although many plaintiffs are claiming that they suffered from internal bleeding while using the medication, vomiting, nausea, heartburn, GERD, abdominal discomfort or pain and gastrointestinal ulcers are also several side effects allegedly caused by Pradaxa. If you have suffered from complications while taking Pradaxa, you may be entitled to file an Oklahoma Pradaxa lawsuit.

Pending Pradaxa Lawsuits in the U.S.

On October 3, 2012, a conference was held to determine how pending cases from those allegedly injured by Pradaxa would be handled. Since the preliminary hearing, however, the cases have been filed into a multidistrict litigation (MDL). Five bellwether trials are scheduled for:

  • August, September, November 2014
  • January, February 2015

Bellwether trials are helpful in lawsuits involving many plaintiffs as they provide the opportunity for both the defendant and plaintiffs to determine how future cases may be settled. The defendant may strongly consider seeking a settlement outside of court if the court appears to side with the plaintiff in the majority of the cases.
