Lawsuit: Manufactures Were Aware That Products Containing Asbestos Were Dangerous
A jury has awarded $6 million to an Oklahoma man who spent years working with products containing asbestos and subsequently developed malignant mesothelioma. According to The Oklahoman, the man’s lawsuit alleged that the makers of these products were aware of the health risks associated with asbestos for decades. The lawsuit also held that, given this knowledge, the companies were allegedly negligent in supplying products containing asbestos.
The plaintiff was exposed to asbestos at various points between 1970 and the early 1990s, according to the lawsuit. He suffered secondary exposure from his father, who worked in home construction and remodeling. The plaintiff also directly used various products that contained asbestos while working at home construction sites, rental properties and an auto repair shop.
The jury in this case declined to award punitive damages in their June 2015 decision. However, the man did receive compensation for his medical costs and lingering physical disablement, in addition to damages for pain and mental anguish, the website reported.
