Stryker Orthopaedics voluntarily recalled their Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems in July 2012. When used with several of their hip implant systems, these components create a better fit between the patient’s particular body type and the hip implant. Numerous reports of complications associated with these types of modular neck stems prompted the recall. The FDA has gotten many reports of complications associated with the Rejuvenate as well as the ABG II modular neck stems. According to a Stryker spokesperson, the possible risks associated with these medical devices outweighs the benefits, thus, the reason for the voluntary recall.
Problems With The Stryker Modular-Neck Stem Devices
Even though the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems can either be used with ceramic or metal hip implants, these neck stem components use a metal-on-metal design. These devices have experienced similar issues also recently associated with other metal-on-metal artificial hip devices. When these modular-neck stems move, their friction creates corrosion or fretting, which can release toxic metal particles into the bloodstream. Complications associated with high levels of metal debris in the bloodstream include the following:
- Pain and swelling
- Inflammation
- Loss of bone
- Damage to surrounding tissues
- Metal poisoning, metallosis
- High failure rates of the implant
- Pseudotumors
Many patients need additional revision surgeries to fix these issues, and those revision surgeries carry added risks to the patient. Healthcare professionals have been informed of the recall by Stryker. If you or a loved one have received a Stryker ABG II modular neck stem during a hip implant procedure, you should speak with your doctor for additional information and get your blood levels tested for higher than normal metal ion levels.
