Affiliated Texas Mirena IUD Attorneys of Texas Attorney Group are currently investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of Mirena IUD users. Deceptive tactics have been used by makers of Mirena, Bayer Inc., in order to market this drug and because of this, many users were unaware of its possible complications and risks, some of which can be very serious. Injuries from the Mirena can be very painful, and may have an impact on the lives of victims as well as their families. Complications from the Mirena may include pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, uterine perforation, irregular bleeding, and amenorrhea. Women who have become pregnant while having the Mirena may suffer a miscarriage as well as put their fertility at risk.

The Deception Associated with Bayer’s Mirena

The Mirena IUD was initially approved as an intrauterine contraceptive, and then later as a method of treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding in women who have already given birth. The way it works is by slowly releasing the hormone progestogen levonorgestrel into the uterus. Mirena is intended for intrauterine contraception for up to 5 years. At that point, if contraception is still desired, the Mirena should be replaced and it is only recommended for those women who have already had at least one child.

The Mirena was marketed by Bayer as a way for “busy moms” to simplify their lifestyle. One of the ways it did this was with “Mirena Parties.” These parties took place in a consumer’s house or other private setting with a Mom Central (an internet site for social networking) representative along with a nurse practitioner and was scripted with marketing tactics such as a way to reconnect with their partners and a way to feel and look great. Such claims were misleading and overstated the proven efficacy of this IUD.

Side Effects of the Mirena

Serious Mirena side effects reported by users have included intrauterine pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, group A streptococcal sepsis, the device becoming embedded within the uterine wall, pelvic inflammatory disease and uterine wall or cervix perforation. Other side effects common with the Mirena include irregular spotting or bleeding, ovarian cysts, headaches, vaginitis, pelvic pain, painful menstruation, and breast tenderness.
