Stryker ABG II Modular Neck System
The ABG II is one of two hip implants by Stryker Orthopaedics that have resulted in a rising number of lawsuits. The Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II were recalled after it was discovered that they can lead to corrosion and fretting, which is a problem that is common when metal-on-metal hip implants are used. Patients who have received these types of hip implant systems could have legitimate grounds for a lawsuit. Stryker Hip Implants Having Same Issues as Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants
A metal-on-metal hip implant means a hip implant that consists of more than one metal component rubbing together. Hip implants made of all metal have become a major issue within the orthopedic community because they have a tendency to fail faster than other kinds of hip implants, forcing some patients to undergo additional revision surgeries. The issue with all-metal hips is that when the metal components rub together metal debris rubs off the implant and gets absorbed into the body, which leads to damaged tissue and other injuries. The Stryker ABG II and Rejuvenate are not technically metal-on-metal hip implants, but they do have parts that have a metal-on-metal interaction and they also have the same problem. Problems associated with metal-on-metal hip implants can include swelling, pain, necrosis (tissue death), damage to bone, pain, pseudotumors, difficulty walking, decreased mobility, and metal poisoning (metallosis).
Stryker Orthopaedics issued a recall for the ABG II modular-neck and Rejuvenate Modular hip stems in July 2012 after reports from some implant recipients began experiencing fretting and corrosion around the junction of the modular neck, which could lead to adverse reactions of local tissue. When metal is rubbing against other metal at the junction of the modular neck, metal debris gets released into the body. This debris can lead to nearby tissue becoming inflamed, which then leads to other health issues. Patients who received these hip devices should speak with their doctor if they experience any pain or swelling.
