Should You Consider a Texas Apex ARC Hip Replacement System Lawsuit?

The Apex ARC Hip Replacement System is a hip implant by OmniLife Science. It consists of a chrome cobalt neck that is inserted into a stem made of titanium. It is being marketed as a significant improvement over other designs for both patients and surgeons, although many people say it bears a resemblance to metal-on-metal hip implants that have already faced recalls and lawsuits.

OmniLife claims the Apex ARC System is different from alternatives, such as Stryker and DePuy hip replacements, both of which have been linked to serious health problems among users. Stryker’s Rejuvenate Modular and ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Stems have been associated with device failure and the corruption of bone and tissue matter in patients. DePuy’s ASR products have been linked to metal poisoning and pseudotumors due to the materials used to construct them, as well as a high rate of device failure. Both companies’ products have been the subjects of lawsuits.

Does the APEX ARC System really avoid the problems associated with these other replacements? OmniLife claims that there is no serious risk of metallosis from the APEX ARC because doctors have a choice in the materials used in their devices, but this is the same claim that was made by Stryker Corp. prior to a mass recall of their products. OmniLife’s design is also similar to those of Stryker’s and other hip replacements that have been determined to be faulty.

In June 2014, a Florida woman who had undergone a hip replacement using the APEX ARC filed a lawsuit against OmniLife, claiming that the device led to pseudotumors and unhealthy levels of chromium, titanium and cobalt in her blood. The outcome of this lawsuit has yet to be determined.

Dangers of Revision Surgery

“Revision surgery” is a term used in the medical industry to refer to procedures patients must undergo in order to replace failed hip implants. These surgeries can be dangerous, with a 150% higher mortality rate than the initial surgery, but patients who have unknowingly had faulty hip replacements have little choice but to take the risk. That is why many patients who have had to undergo revision surgery seek legal counsel.
