Florida Pradaxa LawsuitThe manufacturer of Pradaxa, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutiacls, is facing hundreds of lawsuits claiming that the medication caused serious and adverse side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding and cerebral hemorrhaging. Court documents indicate that there are more than 100 pending lawsuits involving Pradaxa, and attorneys expect that more patients allegedly injured while taking the drug may come forward to seek compensation.

What is Pradaxa?

Pradaxa, initially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010, was intended to help prevent strokes in those living with atrial fibrillation. Additionally, physicians typically prescribed the medication to patients to stop deep vein thrombosis in those undergoing hip or knee replacement therapies as well as to prevent blood clots from moving to the lungs, brain and heart. If blood clots travel to these organs, a patient could suffer from a stroke, heart attack or death.

Despite reports that Pradaxa is safe, critics have also alleged that the medication may increase an individual’s risk of internal bleeding during treatment. The FDA, despite these concerns and studies, has stated that Pradaxa is no more dangerous than other anticoagulants such as warfarin, many of which also allegedly cause internal bleeding and adverse side effects.

Pradaxa May Cause Side Effects

The drug may cause life-threatening health complications such as internal bleeding, according to lawsuits filed by plaintiffs across the country. Pradaxa may prevent the body from being able to form clots, a necessary process to stop bleeding. However, while other anticoagulants have also been linked to internal bleeding, Pradaxa may be more dangerous as there is no current antidote to reverse these affects.

If you have noticed any one of the following symptoms, you may be entitled to file a Florida Pradaxa lawsuit to receive damages for your injury:

Although many patients have taken Pradaxa and reported no side effects, reports assert that the FDA received 542 claims so far of fatalities in individuals using the medication. One of the main concerns from those allegedly injured including internal bleeding, but many others have also reportedly suffered from GERD, heartburn, gastrointestinal ulcers, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain or discomfort. Additionally, five bellwether trials of Pradaxa lawsuits have been scheduled for August, September and November of 2014. January and February 2015 will also see two more trials and allow both plaintiffs and defendants to better understand and predict the outcome of future cases.
