What is Viagra?

Viagra is most commonly prescribed to treat symptoms associated to erectile dysfunction (ED), a medical condition that results in a man’s inability to get an erection and remain sexually aroused. Viagra works by preventing certain enzymes in the tissues of the penis from being released too quickly.

Viagra may also be prescribed to treat a condition known as pulmonary hypertension, a form of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and heart. Both men and women may be prescribed sildenafil for this purpose.

Viagra Side Effects

Like many medications, Viagra has been known to cause a number of side effects. Those side effects include:

  • Aches or pains in the muscles
  • Diarrhea
  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Redness of the skin
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Trouble sleeping

Rare side effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Numbness or tingling of the hands, legs, or feet
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of coordination

Viagra and Melanoma Studies

In 2014, the JAMA Internal Medicine published a study claiming to have found that men taking Viagra are at a significantly increased risk of developing melanoma skin cancer. In the study, researchers reviewed data from 25,848 men who participated in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, a study focused on men’s health and serious illnesses. Researchers found that, when compared to men who did not take Viagra, men with a history of Viagra use were nearly twice as likely to develop the potentially deadly form of skin cancer. According to the study, men who reported current Viagra use were reportedly at an 84 percent increased risk of developing melanoma.

Other Viagra Risks

In addition to common side effects related to the use of Viagra to treat ED, there are some serious but rare risks associated with the medication. Those risks include:

  • Prolonged or persistent erection lasting for more than four hours
  • Unstable angina or irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures or epileptic reactions
  • Sudden death due to heart attack
  • Decrease in vision in one or both eyes
  • Decrease in hearing or hearing loss

Viagra Melanoma Cancer Lawsuits

Pfizer, Inc., the maker of Viagra, currently faces several melanoma cancer lawsuits related to the drug and its alleged association with melanoma. In April 2016, a lawsuit was filed in New York State alleging that the maker of Viagra failed to conduct adequate pre-clinical and clinical testing and post-marketing surveillance to adequately determine the safety and health of the drug. Likewise, the drug manufacturers knew of the significant risks of developing melanoma potentially caused by taking Viagra, however, they did not warn consumers or the medical community of those risks.

The lawsuit further alleges that, despite knowledge of a number of studies linking the drug to an increased risk of melanoma, Pfizer, Inc. continued to manufacture, sell, and aggressively promote the medication. As result of the drug maker’s negligence and wrongful conduct, the plaintiff claims to have suffered severe and permanent physical and emotional injuries, including melanoma as well as biopsies necessary to diagnose the condition.
