Florida Smith and Nephew R-3 Recall Attorneys

In June 2012, Smith and Nephew initiated a recalled of the metal cup component of its R-3 Acetabular System hip implant. The recall was initiated after analysis of data related to the R-3 Acetabular System revealed that a high percentage of patients receiving the implant containing a metal cup component had experienced, and were experiencing, dangerous and painful side effects. A higher than expected percentage of hip implant patients has undergone revision surgeries and total hip replacements requiring long periods of additional treatment and rehabilitation. Florida Smith and Nephew R-3 recall attorneys have been called upon in light on this failure.

Florida Smith and Nephew R-3 Recall AttorneysThe R-3 Acetabular System was first introduced in Europe and Australia in 2007 and in the United States in 2009. The R-3 Acetabular System utilizes an acetabular cup into which the metal femoral head fits. The acetabular cup contains a lining which is made of plastic, ceramic or metal, depending upon the individual needs of the hip implant recipient. In instances where metal lining is used, complications arise from the metal-on-metal contact created by the metal femoral head fitting into the metal acetabular cup. The grinding of the metal lining of the cup against the metal femoral head releases metal shavings into the body which can causes painful and serious conditions including blood toxicity, commonly known as metallosis. Metallosis is an amassing of metal debris in a patient’s body. Side effects of metallosis include confusion, gastrointestinal problems, dizziness, headaches, and nervous system problems. Affected patients may experience burning feelings and numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. They may also develop skin rashes, hearing and sight problems, diminished sight and cognition, hypothyroidism, hip joint pain, stiffness, loss of strength, loss of stamina, increased infections, and loss of hip bone and tissue.
