Complications from DePuy Pinnacle Hip Replacement
DePuy Pinnacle Hip Implant lawsuits allege that this all-metal type’s design is similar to the DePuy’s ASR hip implant, which is another metal-on-metal hip implant that underwent a recall in August 2010. The lawsuits are claiming that the all-metal type of hip implant causes recipients to suffer the same kinds of complications that led to the ASR Hip Implant recall, which includes the following:
- Excessive hip pain
- High metallic levels in the bloodstream
- Early hip implant failure
- Implant loosening
- Additional revision hip replacement surgeries
- Difficulty with walking or standing
The Pinnacle Hip Implant is made of a metal femoral head that rotates against a metal liner. Research has shown that when hip replacement systems are made up of metal-on-metal components, serious complications can occur, which are thought to be caused by the friction of metal on metal parts shedding metal debris in the patient’s bloodstream and surrounding tissues. High levels of metal particles in the bloodstream are unsafe and can lead to cobalt poisoning and a condition called metallosis. Metallosis happens when metallic particles build up in the tissues surrounding the artificial hip. This can eventually lead to loss of bone, surrounding tissue necrosis, pseudotumors developing in surrounding tissues, and early implant failure requiring replacement surgeries. Due to the increasing amount of problems being reported by recipients of metal on metal hip implants in 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration ordered DePuy Orthopaedics along with several other manufacturers of hip replacement systems to conduct studies of their all-metal devices post market to determine if they were causing unsafe amounts of metallic debris to shed in patients.
