For many, all-terrain vehicles, or ATVs, are a great source of entertainment in addition to a highly utilitarian and maneuverable tool for working outdoors. ATVs can be workhorses for landscaping, hunting, and other types of work, but they can also provide many hours of fun.
ATV enthusiasts of all ages are familiar with the usefulness and the entertainment these vehicles can provide, but they may not be familiar with just how dangerous ATVs can be. The risk of serious injuries or even fatalities underscores the need for the use of caution and being mindful that ATVs are not toys – they are very strong machines.
According to United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were nearly 108,000 injuries caused by ATVs that resulted in emergency room treatment throughout 2012. The commission said about one-quarter of those ATV injuries were those younger than 16.
ATV accidents can lead to more serious consequences. The Consumer Product Safety Commission also said there were 353 deaths related to ATV accidents in 2012, a sharp drop from the 554 that occurred in 2011.
One recent ATV crash involves a teenager from Laurel County, who has been hospitalized for more than six months following an ATV accident. The 16-year-old ran into a cable stretched across a gravel pathway, and has received care in Kentucky, Georgia, and Pennsylvania for various complications, including a small intestine transplant. Although not all ATV injuries result in life-threatening internal injuries and the requirement of a multitude of specialized treatments, it is important to be aware of the power and potential of ATVs.
