Byetta, like other incretin mimetics, helps those living with type 2 diabetes, as it stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin and to use the insulin more effectively throughout the body. Patients have reported common, less severe side effects such as fever, abdominal pain and nausea while taking the medication. However, others have reportedly suffered from more serious and life-threatening complications such as acute pancreatitis, pancreatic, thyroid or liver cancers and kidney failure. Plaintiffs may be entitled to pursue a claim with help from a Kentucky Byetta lawyer to seek compensation for their injuries.
Although Byetta is a popular medication for type 2 diabetes patients, as evident by the 7 million prescriptions filed for the medication in 2008, adverse event reports and clinical trials suggest that the medication may cause life-threatening health conditions such as cancer and kidney complications.
One study evaluated 1,200 type 2 diabetes patients and found that, out of 145 participants diagnosed with pancreatitis, 87 individuals were taking Byetta or a similar medication, Januvia, throughout the trial. Byetta, Januvia and other incretin mimetics such as Victoza and Janumet have recently been in the spotlight as plaintiffs throughout the U.S. are naming these drugs in lawsuits and alleging complications.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received over 38,700 claims pertaining to Byetta, 1,700 of which allege that the medication led to an acute pancreatitis diagnosis in patients. Additionally, the FDA received 30 claims of pancreatitis, 78 cases of kidney damage and 62 reports of kidney disease between 2005 and 2008, according to court documents. Byetta has also allegedly been the cause of 375 deaths. If a loved one was taking Byetta and later passed away, you may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim on his or her behalf with legal counsel from a Kentucky Byetta lawyer and seek compensation for final expenses, loss of consortium and other damages.
